Critical Minerals Beyond Copper: Cobalt, Nickel and the Antimony Squeeze

Battery chemistry, alloy demand and export restrictions have reshaped the minor metals complex. A producer's view of where the tightness is real.
The term critical mineral is a policy classification, not a geological one: a mineral is critical when an economy depends on it and cannot readily substitute or source it. That makes concentration of supply, rather than absolute scarcity, the defining risk.
Cobalt: concentrated supply, volatile chemistry
Cobalt demand is dominated by battery cathodes, and cathode chemistry has been actively engineered to reduce cobalt loading — high-nickel NMC and cobalt-free LFP have both taken share. But cobalt remains essential in high-energy-density cells, superalloys for turbines, and hard-facing applications. Supply remains heavily concentrated by both mining geography and refining capacity, so diversified units command attention from buyers running responsible-sourcing programmes.
Nickel: class 1 versus class 2 is the whole story
Headline nickel prices reflect the exchange-deliverable class 1 metal used in batteries. Much of the recent supply growth has been in class 2 material such as nickel pig iron and ferronickel destined for stainless steel, plus intermediates converted through high-pressure acid leach. Anyone reading a nickel quote must know which market their material actually serves.
Antimony: the quiet squeeze
Antimony is used in flame retardants, lead-acid battery alloys, ammunition, and increasingly in solar glass clarifiers and liquid metal energy storage research. Supply is unusually concentrated and has been directly affected by export controls, producing sharp price appreciation and genuine scarcity for Western consumers. Stibnite-bearing material — which occurs in the KWE Honduran concessions alongside gold in quartz vein systems — has moved from a nuisance penalty element in some contexts to a saleable product in its own right.
The common thread is that minor metals reward producers who can document provenance, grade and continuity of supply. Those are exactly the terms on which mine-direct material competes with trader inventory.
