Iron Ore, Direct Reduction and the Coming Premium for High-Grade Feed

Green steel routes need cleaner iron units. Magnetite and high-grade haematite are moving from commodity to specification product.
Steelmaking accounts for a substantial share of global industrial carbon emissions, and the dominant abatement pathways — direct reduced iron using natural gas or hydrogen, feeding electric arc furnaces — are far more sensitive to feed quality than the blast furnace route they aim to replace.
Why grade suddenly matters more
Direct reduction shafts require pellet feed with high iron content and low silica and alumina, because gangue is not fluxed and removed as slag in the same way. That pushes demand toward 65%+ Fe concentrates and toward magnetite, which is straightforward to upgrade by magnetic separation and which produces a cleaner concentrate than many haematite ores. As DRI capacity is commissioned, the differential between benchmark 62% Fe fines and high-grade feed widens.

The Honduran concessions in the KWE portfolio include substantial magnetite-bearing iron mineralisation with a reserve summary of 623,000,000 metric tonnes prepared by Consultores Geología de CentroAmérica S.A. and certified to Behre Dolbear Capital Inc. Magnetite responds well to crushing, grinding and low-intensity magnetic separation, which allows an upgraded product to be produced without the reagent load of a flotation circuit.
For buyers, the practical questions are consistent: Fe content on a dry basis, silica and alumina, phosphorus and sulphur, sizing, moisture, and the reliability of monthly tonnage. Those are the terms we quote against, and they are the terms on which a long-term offtake should be negotiated.
