Water, Waste Rock and Tailings: What Responsible Mining Actually Requires

Sustainability in mining is not a slogan. It is water balance, acid rock drainage control, progressive rehabilitation and a closure plan funded from day one.
Every mine has three physical liabilities that outlive the orebody: the water it touches, the rock it moves and does not sell, and the ground it disturbs. A sustainability programme that does not address all three in engineering terms is marketing.
Water balance before water treatment
The cheapest water to treat is water you never contaminate. That means diverting clean run-off around disturbed ground, sizing sediment ponds for wet-season storm events rather than annual averages, and recirculating process water in closed loops so that make-up demand — not total demand — is what draws on the catchment. In tropical Central America, where seasonal rainfall is intense, storm design capacity is the difference between a controlled site and a discharge incident.
Acid rock drainage is a chemistry problem, not a housekeeping problem
Sulphide minerals exposed to oxygen and water generate acidity, which mobilises metals. The control measures are well established: characterise waste rock for acid generation potential and neutralising capacity before you place it, segregate potentially acid-generating material, encapsulate it within benign rock or below the water table, and cover and revegetate promptly to limit oxygen ingress. Retrofitting these measures after a dump has been built is an order of magnitude more expensive than planning them.
Progressive rehabilitation
- Strip and stockpile topsoil separately; it is a biological asset, not overburden.
- Re-profile and revegetate benches as they are retired, not at closure.
- Use native species so that the restored slope survives without irrigation.
- Monitor and publish water quality data upstream and downstream of the operation.
Community and closure
Local employment, local procurement and transparent grievance processes are the operational core of a social licence. Closure planning belongs in the mine plan from the first bench, with the cost accrued per tonne mined rather than left as a terminal liability.
